While there is no perfect resolution in real life, why do we want it in stories? While real life is full of flaws and unfinished works, why do we want everything to be finished in a movie? Why do we want to hear a beautifully written goodbye from those doomed couples? How many of us received that goodbye in real life? How many things have actually been completed in real life? How many of us have cried for days over the absence of clarity? Without even hearing a proper farewell, without even knowing that he had permanently left? Doesn’t real life lack the dignity of giving us a final scene?
Everything changes, but is all change for the better in real life? Don’t some people change for the worse? Change into a different person? Don’t we lose some people? Aren’t we doomed in real life?
While there is rarely even a redemption arc in real life for the majority of us, why do we want to see it in books? Why can’t we bear to see unfinished stories in fiction? Why does it hurt us? Isn’t real life more painful? Don’t real relationships end without even a hint?
We want a perfect resolution because we want to believe that all those losses need to mean something. But in real life, do all losses really have a meaning?
